FIELD NOTES / PELHAM BAY PARK

A new ritual.
An older story.

American Boy Sprint takes its name from a local sculpture. The event is new; the place already holds generations of athletic history.

1923

Rice Stadium.

Rice Stadium was constructed with funds from the estate of Isaac Leopold Rice. The American Boy sculpture became part of this setting for recreation.

1989

A landmark preserved.

The deteriorating stadium was demolished. The American Boy sculpture was salvaged.

2002

Back beside the track.

The sculpture was reinstalled by the running track, keeping a visible connection to the site’s athletic past.

NEXT

American Boy Sprint.

Real Runners Club’s proposed 400m series borrows its name from that local landmark. Personal progress, seasonal editions, and a reason to come back together.
